The English Gents
The Edmonton International Street Performers Festival is currently on from July 4-13th. Going to be another week of lunch hour photo ops!
Denis Lock and Hamish McCann are The English Gents, two delightfully devilish and cordial English gentlemen who perform inconceivable feats of acrobatic skill, strength and balance, whilst casually sipping tea, reading the newspaper or whatever tickles one’s fancy. The act mixes highly skilled acrobatics with a dry English wit, unexpectedly climaxing with the two hilariously bearing near all for Queen and country. The English Gents. have delighted audiences all over the world, including the likes of Uma Thurman, Shakira, Geoffrey Rush, Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Sondheim and Brendan Fraser, to name a few.
These guys were simply outstanding! Will be uploading more throughout the week so be sure to check out the complete set!

Straight Scoop on Copyright, Model Releases, and Shooting in Public
Scott Kelby has a great interview over on his blog with regards to copyright, model releases and shooting in public for photographers.
So, I contacted New York-based Intellectual Property Attorney Ed Greenberg, who’s a published author on the topic, and who has been dealing with photography copyright, contract, and creative rights issues for over 30 years, to finally get the straight no-nonsense scoop on all this.
Ed is absolutely brilliant; he communicates in Plain English (and with a great sense of humor as well), and he cuts through the bull and gets right to the point (which is why we now have Ed, and photography rights advocate Jack Reznicki, co-host a legal session for photographers at Photoshop World).
Very informative, make sure you head over and check out the two part video interview and the entire “Catch My Exclusive Interview with Attorney Ed Greenberg for the Straight Scoop on Copyright, Model Releases, and Shooting in Public” blog post!

Street TtV
I’ve been doing TtV (Through the Viewfinder) shooting for some time now, every since I built myContraption for my Duaflex I TLR camera. I’ve also been experimenting with TtV Street Photography - I call it TtV Meets Street - and today was a good day. Ended up with about 190 usable images in about 45 minutes.

She’s a winner!
Over at the DPS forums, they set up “weekly” assignments… I try to do them when I remember. The last assignment was From the Hip. So I submitted on of my “Street TtV” shots…
I was pleasantly surprised when I started receiving congratulatory comments on the image above. From the “This Week in DPS” blog post:
We finished the From the Hip assignment this week, and we weren’t at all disappointed with the interesting pictures that people managed to get without actually looking through the viewfinder! Our winner this week was Haeretik for his picture taken through the viewfinder of an old camera. According to him, “Shot this with my XT pointed down through my TtV contraption held by my waist…”.
Many thanks for the selection!

“What’s in the van, man?” The right place at the right time?
Had the good fortune of being in the right place at lunch. A local radio station (Sonic 102.9) has a contest on right now called “What’s in the van, man?” - basically someone gets picked from a random draw to choose either the van or a cash envelope. One or the other contains a “good” prize, the other a not so good prize.
Anyways, took a few pictures, called the station and spoke with someone on their web team and she told me to send them on over - here’s hoping they use them on the site!
Check out the rest of the set!

Jury Clears Photographer Who Refused to Stop Photographing an Arrest
Some good news over at Thomas Hawk’s Digital Connection:
I was pleased today to see an article about photographer Nick Adams being cleared by a Galveston jury of misdemeanor charges of interfering with police while photographing an arrest at a Mardi Gras celebration in 2007.
What gets me is this:
Conveniently, and not surprising to me, police deleted some of Adam’s photos while they had him in custody which would have proved he was outside the perimeter established by the police. According to Adams’ defense attorney, the digital index from his camera showed that these photos were deleted.
That’s gotta be some sorta crime in itself!
While not an arrest, I’m sure these guys would have had something to say had they turn around while I was snapping the shot…
Check out the rest of Thomas’ Jury Clears Photographer Who Refused to Stop Photographing an Arrest post, and hit it up on Digg!

The last shot…
Well tragedy has struck… dropped my camera at lunch, it didn’t like the concrete sidewalk too much. Dunno how much or how long (they estimate 4-6 weeks) it’ll take to fix so I’m camera-less for awhile… looks like it’s gonna be old photo uploads for awhile. Lesson? NEVER EVER use your camera without the strap on! And if you are, crouch or sit on the ground, preferably away from a concrete or otherwise hard surface…
This was the last photo she took… /sigh.
See you in a while.
UPDATE: took a snap of the damage with my cell phone…
